History of the Forty-eighth Ohio Vet. Vol. Inf.
This book made me very emotional, I have to say. It was published in 1880 at the Highland News Office in Ohio. It is a complete account of the regiment from its organization at Camp Dennison, O., in October, 1861, to the close of the war, and its final muster-out, May 10, 1866, including its marches, camps, battles, battle-scenes, skirmishes, sieges, bivouacs, picketing, foraging and scouting; with its capture, prison life and exchange, embracing, also, an account of the escape and re-capture of Major J. A. Bering and Lieut. W. J. Srofe, and the closing events of the war in the trans-Mississippi Dep't. and was written by John A. Bering, Late Maj. 48th Ohio and Thomas Montgomery, Late Captain 48th Ohio.
Here's the thing that made me so emotional--inside the book, on the front end paper, written in pencil are these words--"This book belongs to John H. Tedrick of Co. C, 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The history of the Regiment--written by Maj. John A. Bering--and Capt. Thomas Montgomery--both of Lynchburg, Ohio (Highland Co.)"
On page 289, it is noted that John H. Tedrick enlisted on October 12, 1862, reinlisted later, and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Sabine Cross-Roads, April 8th, 1864. But we know he must have been released because of the date of publication and his inscription. The price on this book is $149.99. Stock number 96177.

The Twin Hells
The Twin Hells is a thrilling narrative of life in the Kansas and Missouri penitentiaries published by The Bee Publishing Co. in 1890. It gives an historic view of the then penal system and is a stark contrast to today's prisons.
I particularly like the dedication--I am a collector of author's dedications--which reads:
To my dear old mother and to the memory of my sainted wife this book is affectionately dedicated by the author.
This book is priced ast $12.49 and is stock number 53685.

The Pocumtuck Buttonball
What a charming little book this is! It is an imaginative historical account of the Pocumtuck Buttonball tree, an ancient sycamore located in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The author, George Sheldon, was 90 years old when he wrote the account in 1908. According to his judgement, the tree would then, in 1935, been 375 years old. Today, in 2010, that would be 450 years old. Col. A. W. Dodge of the F. A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company thought the tree was still older than that, placing its age, in 1935, at between five and six hundred years.
The story is masterfully told with credible speculation of who might have been near and what might have occurred under this very old tree.
A fine read and the only copy of this book that we, through internet research, could find.
That makes it a bargain at only $34.99. Stock number 70196. It is in very good condition.
